MILLY JONES
Melissa Jones was born in Johannesburg in 1975. Milly, as she is more commonly
known, graduated with a BA in Fine Art at the University of Stellenbosch in 1998.
After years of travel and having lived in the Western Cape, South Africa, Milly now resides in Scotland with her family.
Milly has sold her work through local and international galleries and had
numerous group and solo exhibitions.
“It is the versatility of oil and acrylic paint and other media that inspire me to work as a painter. I love to play with materials, experimenting to create intriguing juxtapositions of contrasting effects of texture, design, colour and marks. The process of constructing and deconstructing and play and discernment is like a meditation to me and the hours spent in my studio seem to fly by while I build up the history of a painting. I adore waiting for the artwork to take on its own identity and story. In the past, I have painted a variety of subject matters, mostly representational using bold colour but more recently I prefer working without a reference, and I like to blur the boundaries between abstract and representational art. I spend a lot of time in the woodlands and coastlines in and around Scotland where I find my inspiration for design and colour."
